SHIFT YOUR MINDSET & FUEL MOTIVATION
Hello and welcome back! What’s going well and working this week? One of my favorite coaching questions to ask and sometimes challenging for folks to answer. Why? The survival part of our brain is quick to notice what’s not working, where we are falling short, what’s missing. In our personal life, in our professional work, and in our relationships. Being present with what is going well and what’s working takes a little more effort and deliberation on our part.
Why do we get stuck? We miss the momentum that comes from acknowledging our progress. The evidence right in front of us that we are in process, taking steps and moving toward our desired outcome. Acknowledging wins, big and small, is the fuel for motivation to be resilient, reset and start again when we have off days. How do we do it? With daily practice.
“Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. No single instance will transform your beliefs, but as the votes build up, so does the evidence of your new identity. This is one reason why meaningful change does not require radical change. Small habits can make a meaningful difference by providing evidence of a new identity. And if a change is meaningful, it actually is big. That’s the paradox of making small improvements.” -James Clear, Atomic Habits.
Give it a try! As you close out your day, take a moment and record two wins from the day. Big or small, what’s one action you took today that was a vote for your future self? There’s nothing too small to celebrate! Share it with someone who supports you, ask them about their wins for today. This has been a powerful practice for me personally and one Matt and I have enjoyed together. When you look back at 30, 60, 90 days of small decisions it will not only inform you of your progress but also provide valuable feedback to make necessary shifts moving forward.
We’re playing a long game in this thing called life my friends, make time to enjoy and celebrate the in-between. As always, stay open, brave, and on-purpose.
